Bearjaw (born Bearkit) is a large, dark brown tom, blind and deeply scarred by his time as a prisoner of the Cloudchasers. He is the littermate of Lambthroat and one of the few survivors of the prisoner camp's deepest pit.
As a young loam, Bearpaw attempted to run away with Lambthroat during their first, failed rebellion. The consequence was brutal: he was blinded and moved away, isolated from his brother for seasons. He spent what felt like an eternity in darkness, alone, forgotten.
In the prologue, during the attack on guard Budtail, Lambthroat leaned into the pit and pulled out a blinded, emaciated cat — Bearpaw. After seasons of isolation, he was finally free. Lambthroat welcomed him home with solemn intensity, and Bearjaw has followed him ever since.
Now he serves as advisor to the Roots. Though blind, he sees more than most — he reads voices, footsteps, the weight of silences. His suffering gave him patience, and his patience gave him wisdom. He is one of the few cats who can speak honestly to Lambthroat without fear.
Lambthroat
Bearjaw loves Lambthroat unconditionally — they are littermates, survivors, the only family each other has left. But there is guilt beneath the love: Lambthroat's first attempt at running away cost Bearjaw his eyes. He never blames his sibling, never mentions it, but the weight is always there. Lambthroat's obsession with protecting former prisoners comes partly from this — he can never give Bearjaw back his sight, but he can make sure no one else suffers the same.
Goosesong
Goosesong died when Bearjaw was still in the pit — he never got to say goodbye. He doesn't know the circumstances, only that she's gone. He carries her memory quietly, a warmth in the dark.
