Beetle (born Beetlekit) is a soldier of HCP, the adoptive son of Frost, and one of the most fiercely loyal members of the group. He was born in the Cloudchasers with four extra legs — a physical oddity that, combined with his small size, marked him as a soil from birth. In the Cloudchasers' twisted logic, this meant he was unlikely to survive.
His biological parents died shortly after his birth — victims of the colony's brutality. Beetlekit was left to die, another soil awaiting for his cooling.
But Frost was different. Once a devoted queen of the Cloudchasers, her faith shattered when her own kits were killed for "weakness." Broken and lost, she saw Beetlekit — another unwanted soil — and made a choice. She stole him. Risked everything. Escaped.
Beetle doesn't remember any of this. He doesn't know he was marked for death, doesn't know his biological parents existed at all. Frost told him a different story: that his mother died in a barn collapse, and that she rescued him. It's kinder than the truth.
What Beetle does know is hatred. He hates the Cloudchasers with every fiber of his being. He hates the Roots for carrying on their legacy in a different form. He wants to kill them all — every last one. Frost tries to temper him, to remind him that HCP protects, but Beetle's rage runs deep. He's the most aggressive of HCP's soldiers, always volunteering for missions that involve confrontation, always hoping for a chance to spill the blood of those who made him a orphan before he could walk.
Frost
Frost is the center of Beetle's world. She saved him, raised him, gave him purpose. He would die for her without hesitation. He doesn't know the full truth of how she saved him — doesn't know she stole him from certain death, doesn't know she lost her own kits first — but he knows she's the reason he's alive. In HCP, Frost is the medic, the leader, the heart. Beetle is her sword.
Honey Dew
Honey Dew is Beetle's adoptive sibling — a kittypet who was found and brought into HCP. They grew up together, trained together, became family. But Honey Dew is hiding something. They know something about the Roots, something dangerous, and they refuse to talk about it. Beetle can see it in the way they flinche at shadows, the way they avoid certain topics. They worry constantly — but they'll never admit it.
