"If I have to save you again because of your lack of attention, I might just tear your throat out myself."
— Lambthroat to Crowmuzzle, prologue
Lambthroat is a slender, long-legged snow-white albino cat with scarlet eyes. They have a small scar on their neck, as well as two long ones running along their flanks. They are leader of the Roots and former prisoner of the Cloudchasers. Born as a loam in the prisoner camp, they survived through a combination of luck, ferocity, and an unshakeable will to live. Their bond with Crowmuzzle shaped their early life, and their vision at the willow ravine shaped everything after.
Lambthroat and Crowmuzzle launch a nighttime attack on a Cloudchasers guard named Budtail. Lambthroat moves with deadly precision, sinking their claws into his back and ultimately tearing open his throat. After the kill, they lean into the pit and pull out a blinded, emaciated cat — Bearpaw — welcoming him home with solemn intensity. Crowmuzzle watches, admiring and unnerved in equal measure.
Before the second rebellion, Lambthroat had failed once. Desperate and broken, they wandered to a ravine where the earth had collapsed, swallowing several Cloudchasers warriors and revealing the exposed roots of a massive willow. In that moment, they saw not a cave-in but something way more sinister — nature itself was speaking. The willow's roots became their altar, their proof that the old gods of sky were wrong, and the true divinities were earth, water, and growth. This vision gave them the conviction to gather the second rebellion and, ultimately, to destroy the Cloudchasers.
Now Lambthroat leads the Roots, built on the wreckage of the Cloudchasers. They preach that nature must be fed — that twice a season, the willow requires sacrifice. They protect former prisoners fiercely, but their faith grows darker, more demanding. They dream of something coming, something worse than Cloudmist ever was, and the rituals are the only thing holding it back. Crowmuzzle watches from beside them, growing uneasy but unable to look away.
Lambthroat is fierce, visionary, and utterly convinced of their purpose. Years of captivity forged them into something unbreakable — they move with deadly precision, speak with absolute certainty, and rarely show doubt. But beneath the surface, they carry deep terror: dreams of something worse coming, of not being able to protect those they've freed. Their faith in the willow is genuine, but it's also a shield against the fear that they're becoming exactly what they destroyed.
Crowmuzzle
Crowmuzzle is the only cat Lambthroat truly trusts. Their bond began in kithood, in the prisoner camp — two survivors clinging to each other. Lambthroat's fury is tempered by Crowmuzzle's patience; Crowmuzzle's uncertainty is answered by Lambthroat's conviction. They balance perfectly. But as Lambthroat's faith deepens, a distance grows. They still curl together at night, still murmur reassurances, but Lambthroat notices Crowmuzzle watching the rituals with unease. They pretend not to see.
Bearjaw
Bearpaw is Lambthroat's littermate — they were born together as Lambkit and Bearkit in the prisoner camp. When Lambthroat attempted their first, failed escape as an older loam, Bearpaw was the one who paid the price: he was blinded and moved away, isolated from his sibling for seasons. Freeing Bearpaw from the pit was not just a rescue — it was absolution. Bearpaw is proof that Lambthroat's vision is real, that the willow speaks truth, that the sacrifices mean something. He follows Lambthroat with absolute loyalty, and Lambthroat protects him fiercely — he is one of the former prisoners, one of the ones who must never be sacrificed. But beneath the devotion, there is guilt that never fades: Bearpjaw's eyes are gone because Lambthroat once dared to hope.
Shatteredsky
Shatteredsky is young, loyal, and observant. Lambthroat chose him as deputy because he see what others miss — including, perhaps, the cracks forming in Lambthroat's certainty.
